The Events of Holy Week
On Sunday we looked at Mark 11:1-11, which is Mark’s account of Jesus’ Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem. This event began the final week of Jesus’ life, which we often call Holy Week. In After Hours for this week, I noted that this week is given huge emphasis in each of the four Gospels:
- A third of Matthew, from Matthew 21-28
- A third of Mark, from Mark 11-16
- A quarter of Luke, from Luke 19-24
- Nearly half of John, from John 12-20
I also noted several reasons why this week is so important in the story of Scripture and the history of redemption:
- It is the culmination of Jesus’ life and ministry
- It is the fulfillment of God’s covenant plans and promises:
- Old Covenant had promised Messiah; Jesus fulfilled this
- The Messianic King was to come to the City of the Great King and call Israel to repentance
- Israel rejected this call and the new covenant was instituted
- This initiated the events culminating in 70AD
- It ends with the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus!
To help us understand the events of this week better, I am including a copy of a chart from the ESV Study Bible. It is a table listing all of the events of Holy Week and the corresponding passage in the Gospels. As you can see, while some of the events are covered in every Gospel, some of them are only found in a single Gospel. So this resource helps follow the events of that critical week. I hope it helps as we travel through this final week of Jesus in our study in Mark.
In Christ,
Bret
