Prayer and the Holy Spirit

“Where there is much prayer, there will be much of the Spirit; where there is much of the Spirit, there will be ever-increasing prayer.” – Andrew Murray

Andrew Murray reminds us of the relationship between the Holy Spirit and prayer. Simply put, where the Spirit is, there is prayer. If we claim to be filled with the Spirit we must also be full of prayer. If we want more of the Spirit’s Presence, power, and fruit in our lives, we must give ourselves to prayer. There is no possibility of the Spirit’s Presence, power, gifts, and work apart from prayer.

We see many examples of this in Scripture. David was a man anointed with the Spirit, and he is the primary author of the book of Psalms – the prayer book of the Old Testament. Jesus, the One Anointed with the Spirit, is the preeminent man of prayer. The Spirit is poured out on the church in Acts – while they were gathered for prayer. The disciples are re-filled with the Spirit in Acts while they are praying. Paul tells us in Romans 8 that the Spirit intercedes for us. From beginning to end the Spirit is the Spirit of prayer. Thus, a spirit-filled life is a prayerful life. A Spirit-filled man or woman is a man or woman of prayer.

As we are heading into the summer, many will be taking vacations. But we should never take a vacation from the Spirit – and that means no vacation from prayer! Let’s make this the summer of prayer at BRCC – and thus the summer of the fulness of the Spirit!

In Christ,

Bret
