Book Recommendation

Prince Caspian

Prince Caspian was the second book published in The Chronicles of Narnia series. This tale carries forward the story begun in The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. In fact, it moves forward many centuries in Narnian time – though very little in time on Earth! While waiting for a train, the children are suddenly pulled back into Narnia. At first, they do not know exactly where they are, how long it has been in Narnian time since they left, or why they have been called back into Narnia. Thus, the first part of the book recounts their slow uncovering of where they are, how long it has been, and why they have been called back.

Without giving away details, it becomes apparent that things have not gone well in the intervening years since the children left Narnia and returned to Earth. Aslan is all but forgotten by both humans and talking animals, and Narnia is being ruled by ruthless dictators who show no regard for Aslan’s instructions. But a new Prince named Caspian has arisen who has heard the old stories and believes in Aslan and wants to rule rightly, restoring the talking beasts to their place within Narnia. However, he and the group loyal to him are in desperate straits and thus have used Susan’s magical horn (which was given to her in The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe) to call the four ancient kings and queens back to Narnia to help. But will they arrive in time? And even if they do, how will they be of help?  You will have to read to find out!

Once again, I want to close with a few quotes from Prince Caspian to whet your appetite!

“Things never happen the same way twice.”

“You come of the Lord Adam and the Lady Eve,” said Aslan. “And that is both honour enough to erect the head of the poorest beggar, and shame enough to bow the shoulders of the greatest emperor on earth. Be content.”

“Welcome, Prince,’ said Aslan. ‘Do you feel yourself sufficient to take up the Kingship of Narnia?’

I – I don’t think I do, Sir,’ said Caspian. ‘I am only a kid.’

Good,’ said Aslan. ‘If you had felt yourself sufficient, it would have been proof that you were not.”

“Aslan” said Lucy “you’re bigger”.

“That is because you are older, little one” answered he.

“Not because you are?”

“I am not. But every year you grow, you will find me bigger.”

“To know what would have happened, child? said Aslan. No. Nobody is ever told that.”

I hope you will take the time to enter through the Wardrobe into Narnia – you will be glad you did!

In Christ,

Bret
