A Brief Guide to Christian Denominations

I recently saw an article on The Gospel Coalition website by Trevin Wax that I thought was a good, brief introduction to the various branches of the Christian Church. Rather than re-creating the wheel, I plan to put out the different parts of the article over the next several weeks.

I want to be clear that this is not my writing – it is an article by Trevin Wax. I am simply breaking it into parts. The original article can be accessed here.

Here is the beginning of Trevin Wax’s article:

Our oldest son recently asked us some good questions about different kinds of churches.

  • What’s the difference between the Methodists and Presbyterians?
  • What about Lutherans and Catholics and Anglicans?
  • Baptists are Protestants, right?
  • Are Episcopalians the same as Anglicans?

In our conversation, I fielded a number of questions like this and helped him distinguish the three major branches of the Christian church and the distinctives of some of the subbranches.

Many of you probably have similar questions to those of his oldest son. If so, check back each week and learn a bit about the background and distinctives of the various churches in the world today.

In Christ,

Bret
